Although the head term “free”, gets tons of searches every single day, many of those searches are related to non-paid items like freedom of speech, freedom fries, or someone who still owes student loans.

People search for free stuff differently when searching than they do when they are looking to buy something. When someone is looking for guitars, they might use phrases such as Best guitar under $500, beginner guitars, or cheap amps.

If they are looking for free stuff, they will use phrases such as: How to get free lessons on the guitar, where can you find sheet music, or how to download guitar tabs.

Can you see the difference? You can see the difference?

This is why you should optimize your website for keywords people actually search for and not just keywords that are tangentially related.

You should also avoid using the word “free” as a page title, headline, or meta description. This will reduce your click-through rate which means people are less likely to visit your site.

What should your page titles include? It all depends on the product you are selling, but if you only use the word “free” to describe your offer, then you can include it somewhere.

If I write a post about my tool being free for life, I will include the word “free” within my meta description to let readers know.
