How To Build Custom Audiences in Google Ads: Step-by-Step

Google Ads custom audiences have a high accuracy rate of 50.4 percent. This allows you to match customers with your email list and create custom audiences. These audiences can then be uploaded directly into Google Ads.

1. Go to the Audience Manager

Logging in to Google Ads will allow you to select “Tools” which is represented as a wrench icon. This icon is located in the upper left-hand corner, next to “Reports” and “Go To.” To open a menu, click “Tools”. Click on “Audience manager”, in the “Shared Library” menu.

The redirection will take you to a new page. This will allow you to access custom audiences as well as remarketing audiences.                                    

2. Create a customer list

By choosing “Remarketing”, you can create your audience. This option is located right next to “Custom Audiences”. When the page loads, “Remarketing” is the default choice. Click the blue + icon in the top left-hand corner.

Next, choose “Customer List” from the drop-down menu.

Now it’s time to build your customer base. 

Name of audience

Be specific in naming your audience. Based on past purchases or locations, you might target a particular group of users.

Upload data

Next, choose the data type you want to upload. There are many data types:

  • Email
  • Telephone number
  • Mailing address
  • Mobile device ID

There are two options. You can either use the Google template or create a CSV using Excel or Google Sheets.

While you should include as much detail as possible in your CSV file, You don’t need to include all subscribers’ mailing addresses.

You must make sure that your file follows Google’s formatting guidelines. This is roughly 500 email addresses. However, Gmail addresses are more exact matches than email addresses.

Google will match non-Gmail addresses with particular users if it is possible. Upload your file, and select “Upload plain data” or “Upload encrypted data.” Before being sent to Google, private customer data like email addresses, phone numbers, first names, and zip codes will be encrypted on your computer.                                   

Membership duration

Next, determine the membership length. This is how long a person can stay on your customer list and can be as low as 365 days. Users can’t leave your customers list for longer than this. To avoid that, simply select “No expiration.” “

Audience description

A description of your Google Customer Match audience is not required but it can help you and your team to manage the campaign. 

3. Upload Your list

After you have completed your preferences, click on the blue button to “Upload and Create a List”.

Google will check that your CSV file meets its formatting guidelines once you have uploaded it. Google will match customer data with its targeting information in less than 24hrs.                                    

If your list is large, this process may take longer. Once the process is completed, you can view your report. This will show you:

  • Total customer matches
  • Search Network. Several matches. YouTube. Gmail).

After you’ve created your Google audience, it’s time to start creating an advertising campaign.

  4. Input audience preferences, URLs, places, or apps

Google will calculate your audience size when you create your affinity audiences.

Targeting people who can purchase products or services is possible with in-market audiences. Google also considers content and recency.

These audiences enable you to reach users before they make a purchasing decision. Being there at the right moment can help you convince them to purchase your products or services.
