If you want to send a successful cold email, some key characteristics will increase your chances of getting a reply which is usually a “yes”. This is the checklist that I have used for myself and found very useful.

1) Be concise. You don’t want to make the recipient feel like you are sending them endless amounts of information in rapid succession. This will discourage him/her from replying at all. However, if he does reply, keep his attention focused by giving enough information to not put too much strain on their brains or “their stuff”. Employers appreciate more detail and transparency. However, they should keep it to a minimum.

2) Use verbs such as “Per your request” and “Agreed” where employers often want candidates to accept their decision (the process). It’s better than saying nothing at all if you don’t have anything interesting/important about yourself. You can debate the phrases I would use.

3) If you can, list things you liked and disliked about your current employer (or one before). This is a crucial part. It’s easy to make negative comments or give vague references that aren’t obvious enough to be noticed. People won’t hire you if you are too focused on what worked. When you say “I didn’t like this”, or any similar statement, make sure your tone is positive, not bitter, and that you aren’t unappreciative of misfits who haven’t done their jobs properly. If people dig deeper enough, it doesn’t take long for them to dislike many aspects of your personality.

It’s important to not make it obvious. I’ve seen many emails in which people say, “I want your feedback for our next section meeting.” This is common because it’s frequently mentioned and is considered “in queue”. Be prompt and inform your boss about the meetings if you choose to follow this route.

4. You can say something completely different from what you normally would. This could lead to them trying to fire you or talking to your boss. You can make an appointment with HR if they insist on keeping information to themselves. If you don’t get a response, it’s not a good sign. However, there are positive outcomes for both sides. !
