Web design is all about emotion.
Emotion plays an important role in the conversion of your site. Empathy and understanding users’ emotions can help you build long-lasting relationships.
People will be more comfortable working for your company. Visitors will not convert into customers if they aren’t able to feel empathy and emotion.
Here are 4 ways to get started with emotional web design.
Let’s now look at four ways to incorporate design elements that appeal to and meet visitors’ needs.
1. Do a qualitative deep dive to identify end users
I research clients’ end users whenever I’m beginning a new web design project (big and small). This allows me to identify opportunities and set goals for the project. You can identify your users easily by looking at your Google Analytics demographic data and combining it with information about your user base. You can then create target persons.
After identifying key people for a project I like to put on my “end user glasses” to view a website through their eyes. As if I were the end-user, the steps that I take are:
- I arrived at the site with a goal in mind (e.g. to purchase a pair of shoes).
- While browsing the site, I keep track of every emotion and reaction.
- I want to know if this site provides value for me (the user) at every step of the conversion process.
- I have identified any roadblocks that may prevent me from buying or submitting a form.
- To evaluate UX and identify missing steps, I use the same steps with a tablet or mobile device.
Then I repeat the steps on competitor websites. I keep notes throughout. After I have taken all my notes, I remove my “end-user glasses”, and begin to understand the reactions I received on each site. This is how I prefer to conduct a qualitative competitor analysis. By putting myself in the shoes of end users, I can create designs that appeal more to their emotions and needs.
2. Send user surveys online
When you need direct feedback from users about the site’s emotional response and their needs, online surveys can be a great tool. To create the web design plan, I combine my qualitative deep dive with feedback from users to create a web development project plan.
Ask yourself these questions:
- What information do you want to find out after the survey is completed?
- What is the best way to find out?
- What do you think the outcome will look like?
- What data will I need to analyze for me to answer my questions?
- Do you have any other factors I should consider?
It is easy to set up user surveys with Hotjar, Crazy Egg, and Survey Monkey. After collecting responses, you can analyze the data and determine opportunities to improve your design.
3. Preferential research
Next, preference testing allows you to tap into audience insights and emotions to improve your website’s design. After conducting initial research on your project, you have entered the wireframing and prototyping phases of your Miami web design agency. Quick preference tests can be a cost-effective and efficient way to get feedback about your prototypes.

4. Your website should include informational, reassuring, and persuasive content
The last tip I have isn’t a test. It’s free if your project is well-designed. You will likely have identified areas of user tension or resistance to conversion after going through the above tests. Your website is often lacking in user tension.

- Safety signals or visual security
- Social proof
- Clear calls for action (CTAs).
Once you have identified areas of tension, it is possible to write content that addresses users’ concerns and helps them feel more confident doing business with your company.
