Video production is an art and science. Videos are the future, and we are at the cutting edge.

We are sure that we all know what a commercial, a good documentary, or a movie is. Well, that’s exactly what video productions are. But I’m going to give you a good definition of what video productions are. Video production is the production of content for digital media, usually for film and television, regardless of the medium used or the genre.

All video productions result from the sum of various needs: industrial, commercial, entertainment, cultural or artistic.

Behind all these needs, there are always equal parts; a capital investment, a mix of work and technical resources, and a work plan.

This planning is known, both in the world of the film industry and in television, as video production.

The production process is so important that the way of organizing it can be decisive in the face of success or failure of the work carried out by the team.

In all production, it is essential to develop a work plan.

Within this planning, it is necessary to clarify what will be recorded, who will be present at the recording, where it will take place, when it will be done and how it will be done.

Despite being very controlled and planned, production is not a process lacking creativity and expressiveness.

The director, the producer’s right hand, is the one who makes use of that creativity and expressiveness within the limits that have been set for him.

PHASES OF ALL PRODUCTION

Within all video productions, there are 3 phases that we have to follow in order to carry out a production correctly:

  • Pre-production: Pre-production is the most critical phase of the production process, although it is a completely independent process from production as such. It includes from the moment the idea is born until the recording begins. The greatest productive effort is made in this phase. The production team will attend to the resolution of the problems posed by the people and the precise means to carry out the program. This is where the fixer does its thing.
  • Production and filming: It is the implementation of all the ideas thought in the pre-production phase. Poor planning would cost a significant amount of time and money. At this stage of the production, the camera crew, the sound technicians, the artistic direction and decoration team, the illuminators, etc. are incorporated. The working day ends with the viewing of the recorded material and the preparation of the next day.
  • Post-production and export: The post-production process is totally independent from that of Pre and Production. Even different companies can do it. It consists of selecting the recorded material and choosing the shots used for editing and mounting the project. In this last phase, production is responsible for obtaining the final product, the “master” from which the copying process will proceed. Once the video post-production is finished, the video must be exported to obtain the final product that will allow it to be consumed as an independent element and reproducible through other applications, whether mobile, television, internet, etc.

TYPES OF VIDEO PRODUCTIONS

ADVERTISING SPOT

We know this type of video production best since advertisements are almost part of our way of life.

A spot or advertisement is video support to an audience through television. Its duration is usually between 10 and 70 seconds to promote a product, service or commercial institution.

From one minute onwards and up to five minutes, the ad can be referred to as a capsule.

Ads are produced with a duration greater than five minutes and whose structure resembles that of a television program segmented and cut into blocks, called infomercials, where presenters, experts, and witnesses present at the time of the show intervene.

Its main advantage is that we can reach an insane number of people with our spot depending on the chosen schedule. Hence, the prices per second in television advertising are very high.

But if we have done our job well, our spots may be remembered for a long time (decades).

MUSIC VIDEOS (VIDEO CLIPS)

I think the name itself speaks for itself, right? But let’s go with the definition:

A video clip is a short film made mainly for broadcast on video, television, and Internet portals, which offers a visual representation or interpretation of a song or a musical theme.

It is created to sell or promote a song and to build or reinforce the image of an artist or group.

Although the genre was born for advertising, the large budgets for video clips allow for better equipment (both human and material), translating into the same or more quality used on the big screen.

This has made possible another type of achievement: through the video clips, ideology and modes of behavior, social stereotypes, and cultural and vital references are created.

The video clip always arises from previous musical work and adds visual richness for its main television broadcast.

FILM PRODUCTIONS

Filming (which is called film production) is the process of creating a film.

A film is usually a story (fictional or documentary), recorded on a medium (flexible film or digital container) that is recorded and read through a continuous or intermittent image succession mechanism. These motion pictures are also called film or film, as well as the abbreviation movie.

The filming is made up of different stages, of which an initial story, an idea or a commission are part.

It is carried out from a script, the cast, the filming, the sound recording and the reproduction, editing, and projection of the final result before an audience.

Filming can take place in many locations around the world, in various economic, social and political contexts, and uses a wide variety of cinematographic technologies and techniques.

Usually, many people are needed for these video productions, and it can take from a few months to several years to shoot.

DOCUMENTARY FILM

It is a cinematographic genre based on the use of previously documented real images to build a story.

The documentary is the expression of an aspect of reality, shown in video form. The organization and structure of images and sounds (texts and interviews), according to the author’s point of view, determine the type of documentary.

A documentary has no limits; it can deal with any subject that the director deems appropriate.

The chronological sequence of the materials, the treatment of the figure of the narrator, the nature of the materials —genuine, recreations, infographic images, etc.— give rise to such a wide variety of formats today, ranging from documentary pure up to create documentaries.

There are even models of very various reports such as docudrama (format in which the real characters interpret themselves), reaching the mockumentary.

Usually, fiction programs adopt a structure and narrative mode that is very close to the documentary, and some documentaries even reproduce resources typical of the creation of works of fiction.

DOCUMENTARY SERIES

A documentary series is recorded in different episodes that pursue the same story and aims to tell a topic in depth. It can be of any theme and from any time in history.

The documentary genre also admits a serial broadcast on television and its different variants, arising from a process of incorporating techniques characteristic of other genres.

This is the case of the information in the docudramas in which reality is approached with narrative resources typical of fiction series, such as the script based on plots and even characters.

Another variant of the documentary is the docu-soap ( docu, from the documentary; soap, from soap opera ), although, in this case, the narrative techniques used do not come from fiction series, but rather from TV series.

FICTION SERIES

Who does not know today what series are? If we spend practically all our free time with them! They are one of the most fashionable video productions today.

Also known as a television series, it is a type of video production made up of episodes with the same plot or theme.

It also has different variants, the most prominent being the so-called sitcoms, sitcoms for television format.

INTERVIEWS

In common parlance, the word “interview” refers to a one-on-one conversation between an interviewer and an interviewee. But in video productions, video comes into play to immortalize the interview.

The interviewer asks questions to which the interviewee responds, usually by providing information.

An interview is essentially a structured conversation in which one participant asks questions and the other provides answers.

That information can be used or provided to other audiences immediately or later.

This feature is familiar to many types of interviews: a job interview or an interview with an event witness may not have another audience present at the time, but the answers will be provided to others later in the employment or investigative process.

An interview can also transfer information in both directions.

Interviews almost always involve spoken conversations between two or more parties. In some cases, a “conversation” may occur between two people who write their questions and answers.

Interviews usually occur face-to-face and in person, but the parties may be geographically separated, such as in video conferences or telephone interviews.

CORPORATE VIDEO

It is almost a “must” today to have a corporate video for all companies on the planet, and it is one of the most consumed video productions in the workplace.

The corporate video is the one with which we intend to present our company or business; It is a letter of presentation of the company. It is influenced in those values that positively differentiate it from the competition.

The corporate video refers to any type of non-advertising video content created and commissioned by a business, corporation, or organization.

Today, most corporate video content is on the Internet, posted on the company’s website page, and distributed via social media or email marketing.

The content of the corporate video is directed to the main demographic or internal data of that company. Corporate video production is typically the responsibility of a marketing director or corporate communications manager.

Examples of corporate videos include corporate overview videos, staff safety and training videos, branding or promotional videos, investor and shareholder relations videos, market updates, product videos, executive proposal videos, and customer testimonial videos.

Corporate video production companies (us) take advantage of company marketing material, guidance from their chief communication officer, and specific content copy to produce their corporate video.

The time and scale of producing a corporate video can vary greatly depending on the complexity required.

INSTITUTIONAL PRODUCTIONS

This type of video production focuses on presenting the organization in question (town halls, schools, soup kitchens, museums, etc.) to transmit an image adjusted to the viewer and the content to which you want to give visibility in the campaign.

The production of institutional videos seeks to publicize the institution’s image, work, objectives, and methodology and create closeness with the citizen.

Its objective is to create a quality relationship with people, make itself known socially and project a public image appropriate to its purposes and activities.

These video productions are messages that a city council, county council or public institution directs to its citizens to promote behaviors or values, inform about the rights and obligations of society, etc.

This type of advertising is not intended for sale or contracting but is used to establish communication between the public body and the people.

REALITY SHOWS

It is clear that the best known to all is Big Brother, but there are already hundreds of “realities” and newer that are being created just when you are reading this.

They are reality TV shows, or as it is known almost all over the world, reality TV or simply reality TV.

Reality Shows is a television genre responsible for documenting unscripted situations in which a group of people who until then are unknown interacts.

Reality shows usually highlight the dramatic and conflictive life of the characters, something that compares it to the documentary genre.

It uses different standardized elements such as confessional ones where participants express their thoughts and even serve as narrators of the program.

There is the elimination portion per episode in reality-based competitions, a panel of judges, and the concept of immunity from elimination.
